While on a trip to Convict Lake (outside of Mammoth) to check out a possible spot for a possible family reunion, I convinced my wife to sit outside with me at 1:00 am for a couple of hours in near-freezing temperatures to keep me company (along with a bottle of wine–hey, I shoot bottles of wine, so I might as well drink them, too!) while I made my first feeble stabs in the dark (literally and figuratively) at star-trail photography. I’ll be the first to admit that my first try was not typical of a good example of the genre, but since it wasn’t terrible, I have to admit that I was pretty happy with it. Well, at least happy enough to attempt it again in the future—hopefully during the summer and with a flashlight…oh, and without 2 feet of snow.
